Lead Engineer - Platform

Our Platform Team is the backbone of our engineering organization, responsible for providing the tools, environments, and infrastructure that empower our product teams to deliver world-class software at scale. As the Lead Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in establishing and driving the technical strategy of this team. You will lead the development and implementation of cutting-edge CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code (IaC) practices, observability frameworks, and security enhancements. Your leadership will be crucial in enabling other teams to be self-sufficient, ensuring that our platforms are secure, reliable, and performant. What will you do?

  • Implement Technical Strategy: Collaborate with the Engineering Leadership team on initiatives to improve developer experience and overall platform efficiency. Ensure alignment with the company’s goals and objectives, driving a cohesive strategy across CI/CD, infrastructure as code (IaC), and DevSecOps practices.
  • Lead the Team: Oversee and mentor a small team of engineers, providing guidance and support to ensure high performance and professional growth. Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture that emphasizes innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Drive Innovation: Stay abreast of the latest industry trends, technologies, and best practices. Identify opportunities for innovation within the platform team, and implement new technologies and processes to keep our infrastructure and services ahead of the competition.
  • Ensure Reliability and Performance: Design, implement, and optimize robust CI/CD pipelines, monitoring systems, and infrastructure to ensure the reliability, scalability, and performance of our platforms. Utilize tools like GitHub, Terraform, Prometheus, Grafana, and others to maintain high standards of operational excellence.
  • Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams: Act as a liaison between the platform team and other engineering teams. Provide enabling tools and services that help these teams be self-sufficient in DevOps and SRE practices, ensuring consistency and reliability across environments.
  • Solve Complex Technical Problems: Identify and resolve technical challenges that arise in the development and deployment of infrastructure and services. Ensure that our platforms can scale effectively and securely as we grow.
  • Optimize High-Performing Teams: Implement Team Topologies to organize and optimize team structures and interactions. This will ensure effective collaboration, streamlined workflows, and a modernized architecture that supports the company’s long-term vision.

What will you add?

  • Technical Expertise: Leverage deep knowledge of CI/CD, infrastructure as code, observability, and security to drive the platform strategy. Demonstrate hands-on experience with tools like GitHub, Terraform, Prometheus, Grafana, OpsGenie, InfluxDB, and ClickHouse or similar.
  • Leadership and Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement. Lead by example, demonstrating a strong work ethic and commitment to technical excellence.
  • Customer-Centric Approach: Maintain a commitment to understanding and addressing the needs of our internal customers (i.e., other engineering teams). Focus on delivering exceptional developer experiences and enabling teams to work more efficiently and effectively.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: Utilize data analytics and metrics to inform engineering decisions. Measure the success of platform initiatives and continuously refine processes based on quantitative insights.
  • Strong Project Management Skills: Effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and ensure that deadlines are met. Maintain a strategic focus while overseeing the day-to-day operations of the platform team.
  • Strategic Vision: Bring a long-term perspective to engineering planning and decision-making. Align technical initiatives with business goals, ensuring that our platform capabilities support the company’s overall mission and objectives.
  • Adaptability: Thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and market conditions. Stay agile and ready to pivot as needed to meet new challenges and opportunities.

  • Experience in a Fast-Paced Startup Environment: Proven ability to thrive in a dynamic, rapidly changing environment with the agility to pivot quickly. Experience scaling teams and systems in a startup setting is highly valued.

  • Experience with Developer Experience (DevEx): A background in improving developer tools, workflows, and productivity. Passion for enhancing the developer experience and making it easier for teams to deliver high-quality software.
  • Knowledge of Team Topologies: Understanding and practical experience in applying Team Topologies principles to improve team interactions and efficiency. Ability to reorganize teams for better flow and reduce cognitive load.
